About the event

Prayer flags are hung to be read by the wind. Tibetans call them lungta, the wind horse, and every printed mantra is meant to travel outward across the land as the cloth weathers and fades.

Dr. Chok Tenzin Monlam returns to the Jacques Marchais Museum of Tibetan Art to lead an afternoon of meditation followed by the raising of new prayer flags on our campus. Over several years of programs here, Dr. Chok has guided our community through Tibetan yoga, dream yoga, and the healing practice of mantra, from the six-syllable Om Mani Padme Hum to the root syllables Om Ah Hum. His teaching draws on a decade as a monk ordained by His Holiness the Dalai Lama, a PhD from the University of Delhi, and long training under teachers from the major and minor Tibetan Buddhist traditions.

The meditation opens the program — guests will then step outside for the flag raising, sending fresh prayers for peace, compassion, and wisdom into the wind over Lighthouse Hill. The practice is open to all levels, and no experience is needed.

Dr. Chok Tenzin Monlam is an accomplished teacher, scholar, author, translator, and healer dedicated to preserving and sharing Tibetan Buddhist culture and language in the modern world. His teaching covers Tibetan language, Tibetan yoga, meditation, healing practices, and Buddhist science and philosophy.

Ordained by His Holiness the Dalai Lama, Dr. Chok studied and practiced as a Tibetan monk for ten years. He continued his academic studies for more than two decades, earning multiple degrees in Buddhist and Tibetan studies, including a PhD from the University of Delhi. He has trained extensively in Buddhist studies, Tibetan yoga, meditation, and healing under teachers from many of the major and minor Tibetan Buddhist traditions.

For 13 years, Dr. Chok served as Head of the Research and Translation Department at the Library of Tibetan Works and Archives in Dharamshala, India, before relocating to the United States in 2019. As an author and translator, he has written or translated more than 39 books and numerous articles, including two books on learning the Tibetan language.

A major focus of Dr. Chok’s work is Tibetan yoga and meditation. Tibetan yogic traditions are rarely taught today, and Dr. Chok is qualified to teach both Tibetan and Indian traditions of yoga. He has shared these practices and their benefits for the body, energy, and mind throughout India, the United States, and more than a dozen other countries.

Dr. Chok is also trained in traditional healing practices, including Chöd, pranic healing, mantra healing, and other modalities. He currently teaches Tibetan yoga, meditation, healing, and Buddhist philosophy through organizations in the United States and internationally, including the Jacques Marchais Museum of Tibetan Art in New York, Tibet Center Chicago, Tibet House Frankfurt, and the Brooklyn Public Library’s University Open Air program.
