Since 1947, visitors have climbed Lighthouse Hill to a pair of fieldstone buildings designed after a Tibetan monastery. Inside is one of the earliest collections of Himalayan art assembled in the United States, made up of thangkas, sculpture, ritual objects and a research library. The Jacques Marchais Museum of Tibetan Art has looked after all of it for close to eighty years, with no large endowment, kept going by members, neighbors, teachers and volunteers.

 

Your gift keeps that going — It cares for the collection and the site. Two historic buildings and their terraced gardens need steady upkeep: clearing drains, sealing leaks, and keeping the galleries at the temperature and humidity the objects need.

 

It puts culture bearers at the front of the room. We pay the teachers, artists and practitioners who lead our programs, so that Tibetan and Himalayan traditions are presented by the people who carry them.

 

It opens the doors wider. Meditation, talks, tours and performances, here on the hill and online, for neighbors who have come for decades and for visitors finding us for the first time.

 

Every gift, of any size, helps the Museum stay what its founder meant it to be: a place where anyone can sit with the art of Tibet and the Himalaya.
