Global Resonance: Voices for Unity in a Contemporary Society

Global Resonance: Voices for Unity in Contemporary Society is the first in a series of exhibitions dedicated to exploring the legacies of global figures who have inspired people across the world through their compassion, wisdom, and an unwavering commitment to peace. This inaugural exhibition centers on His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso, illuminating his cultural heritage, spiritual teachings, and lifelong advocacy for nonviolence and unity.

The exhibition draws from the museum’s rich collection of Tibetan artifacts to trace the Dalai Lama’s lineage, particularly his connection to Avalokiteshvara (Chenrezig) the Bodhisattva of Compassion, of whom each Dalai Lama is considered to be an emanation. Historic thangkas, ritual instruments, and ancient sculptures offer insight into the traditions that inform his identity and message.

A central component of the exhibition is a series of photographs, created in collaboration with the
Tibet Museum in Dharamsala, India, featuring images of the 14th Dalai Lama that capture key moments of his life. These range from his early years as a young monk in Tibet, through his exile, to his tireless global advocacy and present-day role as a spiritual leader and symbol of hope.
Carefully curated for their historical and emotive significance, the photographs invite viewers into the intimate human dimension of his journey. They reflect the resilience, gentleness, and conviction that define his leadership, while illuminating his lifelong commitment to peace, interfaith dialogue, and universal values. Accompanying captions highlight the four core spiritual teachings the Dalai Lama hopes to leave as his legacy principles that transcend religious boundaries and resonate with people of all backgrounds.
This exhibition invites visitors to reflect on the evolving role of spirituality in contemporary society and the power of individual action rooted in universal values. It speaks to diverse audiences, students of global history, practitioners of Tibetan Buddhism, and all who seek a deeper understanding of how peace can be nurtured through compassion and dialogue. Global Resonance marks the beginning of an ongoing journey as future exhibitions highlight the lives and legacies of
Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King Jr., Nelson Mandela, Mother Teresa, and Daisaku Ikeda who, like the Dalai Lama, have inspired movements toward unity, compassion, justice, and peace far beyond boundaries of time and place.
As part of the JMMTA’s Global Resonance Project, this Exhibition is supported, in part, by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council.
