About the event
Umer Piracha (@umerpiracha) is a New York–based Sufi vocalist and composer whose work explores devotional music as a practice of attention, listening, and shared experience. Raised in the Sufi city of Multan, Pakistan, and apprenticing within the 700-year Qawwali lineage of the Saami Brothers, he brings this tradition into conversation with improvisation and contemporary performance.
His performances and collaborations span Harvard Divinity School, Grace Cathedral, Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, and the Cathedral of St. John the Divine, and his work has been featured on NPR.
Much of contemporary life unfolds through screens. We scroll toward pleasure, perform versions of ourselves, react before we have time to feel, and carry the sense that something is always happening elsewhere without us.
The Unheld Note asks what becomes possible when we listen differently.
In this 60-minute performance, Sufi vocalist Umer Piracha moves through devotional song, improvisation, breath, and silence to create an experience of “feeling before meaning.” Woven through the performance is the Buddhist teaching of the Four Maras, reflected in patterns familiar to contemporary life: craving, attachment to identity, emotional reactivity, and our difficulty accepting that everything passes.
Through voice, vibration, repetition, and shared attention, the audience is invited to encounter sound before needing to interpret it.
At the Tibetan Museum, two contemplative traditions meet through the act of listening itself.
