An Afternoon of Poetry with Marguerite Rivas, First Poet Laureate of Staten Island


Spend the afternoon with Marguerite Maria Rivas who will read both new and selected poems as well as vignettes

from her manuscript in progress. She will also be reading several poems by the late Staten Island

poet Catherine Murray. The reading will be followed by time for questions and discussion. 


Marguerite María Rivas, a native of Staten Island and the borough’s first Poet Laureate, Her essays and poetry have been published in anthologies, journals, and periodicals, both nationally and internationally. Much of her creative and scholarly work is rooted in the history, culture, and environment of Staten Island. She is the author of two volumes of poetry. In 2023, she shared her story, Between the Rock and a Heart Place, on Broadway as part of the celebration of The Moth's 25th anniversary. This Peabody Award-winning storytelling organization later…
