About the event

Join us at the museum to enjoy a performance of the Sri Lankan Dance Academy (SLDA), a classical dance school dedicated to preserving and showcasing the rich traditions of Sri Lankan performing arts rooted in the ancient Kandyan dance tradition. The Academy’s performances feature a dynamic group of talented dancers trained in the highly stylized, rhythmic, and graceful movements of Kandyan dance, including ceremonial pieces, folk-inspired choreography, and innovative adaptations that honor the foundation of classical forms while embracing contemporary expression. Under the artistic guidance of Guru Dilhan Pinnagoda, the Academy continues a legacy of excellence, discipline, and deep cultural reverence, proudly bringing the vibrancy of Sri Lankan culture to diverse audiences in NYC and across
the country. During and after the dances, a representative of the Academy will lead a discussion about the different dances with time for Q & A

Please Note: The SLDA offers weekly Sunday classes at the Snug Harbor Cultural Center for students of all levels who are interested in learning traditional Sri Lankan dance. These sessions are a wonderful opportunity for all youth to engage in a vibrant, community-based arts practice. We invite you to join us in celebrating the beauty, power, and cultural richness of Sri Lankan dance.
The Jacques Marchais Museum of Tibetan Art is able to offer today’s program through the support of the New York City Council Cultural Immigrant Initiative Discretionary Grants provided by City Council Member Joseph Borelli and City Council Member David Carr.
