Shirley Chisholm's Legacy: Reimagining Democracy in the U.S and Diaspora, a talk and book signing by Dr. Zinga Fraser, Assistant Professor in the Africana Studies Department and Women’s and Gender Studies program at Brooklyn College and author of her newly published book Shirley Chislom in Her Own Words at Christ Church Parish Hall (76 Franklin Avenue)  Visit  www.tibetanmuseum.org  for additional information and to reserve a seat. 


Dr. Zinga A. Fraser is currently an Assistant Professor in the Africana Studies Department and Women’s and Gender Studies program at Brooklyn College. A foremost expert on Shirley Chisholm, Black Congressional Women, and Black feminist politics and culture, Dr. Fraser serves as the Director of the Shirley Chisholm Project on Brooklyn Women’s Activism, and most recently was the historical consultant on the Netflix feature “Shirley,” written and directed by John Ridley, produced by and starring Regina King.


Her book, Shirley Chisholm: In her Own Words a Collection of Speeches and Writings, published October 8 th , explores Chisholm’s intellectual legacy. After her talk, copies of the book will be available for purchase and signing.   Dr. Fraser abides by one of Shirley Chisholm’s most famous quotations - “Service is rent we pay for the privilege of living on this earth.”

 

Born and raised in Brooklyn, Dr. Fraser is the co- curator Shirley Chisholm at 100: Changing the Face of Democracy which is the first major museum exhibition on the life and legacy of Shirley Chisholm at the Museum of the City of New York which opened in June 2024.

She has published several works and is currently completing her book manuscript titled, Sister Insider/ Sister Outsider: Shirley Chisholm and Barbara Jordan, Black Women’s Politics in the Post- Civil Rights Era. 

Before entering academia, Dr. Fraser’s was a Legislative Assistant on Capitol Hill. She has won numerous fellowships and awards from the American Association of University Women (AAUW), American Political Science Association, Columbia and

Northwestern University, and the Delta Research and Educational Foundation.


She holds a doctorate in African American Studies from Northwestern University, a Master of Arts from the Institute

for Research in African American Studies at Columbia University and a BA in Political Science and

African American Studies from Temple University.

She is currently a Sister Scholar for the Delta Research and Educational Foundation and has served as a committee member

for Gucci Global Changemakers scholarship initiative.




The Jacques Marchais Museum of Tibetan Art  is able to offer today’s program through the support of the

New York City Council Cultural Immigrant Initiative Discretionary Grants provided by City Council Member  Joseph Borelli

and City Council Member David Carr.
