Meditation Classes

The Jacques Marchais Museum of Tibetan Art offers guided Meditation classes on most Saturday mornings(*). Admission is $12/$10 for members.

Thupten Phuntsok, or Phuntsok-la (as he is respectfully called in his community) leads guided meditations Saturday mornings starting at approximately 11:45am and going to approximately 1:00pm. These guided meditations are conducted without any religious overtones and are strictly devoted to learning, practicing and becoming well-versed in the practice of meditation. Reserve Your Spot in Our January Meditation Classes
The JMMTA is normally closed during the month of January with meditation classes resuming in February. However, we would be pleased to offer our Saturday guided mediation classes if at least 10 people sign up for the class. If you would like to attend our meditation classes starting on January 3rd, please reserve your spot by clicking here. Please reserve your spot before December 1st.

When attending our meditation classes, we ask that you observe the following rules:

  • The Museum will provide chairs, cushions, and please feel free to remove your shoes.
  • Please remember to silence your cell phones.
  • Our meditation sessions may be recorded and/or photographs may be taken. This may include audio and/or video recordings and still photographs. By paying for the meditation session, you acknowledge this and grant us permission to make these recordings and/or still photographs and publish these in the public domain. Should you not want to be included in these recordings/photographs, please do not participate in our meditations.
  • Should you have any questions, you may ask Thupten Phuntsok your questions either in the middle of the meditation session or at the end of the session.

Thupten Phuntsok

Thupten Phuntsok (say poont-sok) started practicing meditation when he was around 12 years old and began the Tibetan form of meditation when he was 21. He learned to meditate first from Kyongla Rato Rinpoche in Manhattan when he had his center in Chinatown and studied with him for 8 years. After 8 years with Kyongla Rato Rinpoche, Thupten Phuntsok met his life teacher Sera Me Kensur Rinpoche Lobsang Tharchin at his center in Howell, New Jersey. From time to time Phuntsok-la travelled to India and learned from Sera Monastery in India and also learned from the Dalai Lama when he taught publicly in India and here in the US.
