From the Executive Director
January 2008
Dear Friends,
On October 5, 1947, the Jacques Marchais Center of Tibetan Art officially opened to the public, an event so significant it was featured in LIFE magazine. To mark the 60th Anniversary milestone, the Museum will extend the exhibition, From Staten Island to Shangri-La: the Collecting Life of Jacques Marchais, through December 2008. I encourage you to visit the Museum and see this informative and enlightening exhibit.
Exhibits and public programs are made possible by the support of individual donations, "Friends" of the Museum, foundations and local elected officials. The Museum is pleased to announce the following grants that have been received since June of 2007.
New York City Department of Cultural Affairs -- $50,000 for exhibits, public programs and collection management.
The Richmond County Savings Foundation -- $25,000 for collection management and the fall calendar of public programs.
The Staten Island Foundation -- $10,000 for the acquisition of presentation of Tibetan Portrait, an exhibition of photographs by Phil Borges, opening at the Museum in spring 2009.
Assemblyman Michael J. Cusick - $10,000 for exhibits and public programs.
Councilman Michael E. McMahon -- $10,000 for exhibits and public programs.
Councilman James Oddo -- $3,500 for exhibits and public programs.
Mr. Peter Salvatore -- $1,000 for the installation of From Staten Island to Shangri-la: The Collecting Life of Jacques Marchais.
Many thanks to all of our donors for their loyal and continued support.
