Tibetan Portrait: The Power of Compassion. Through portraits by renowned contemporary photographer Phil Borges, interactive displays, and objects, Tibetan Portrait shows the traditions and beliefs of the Tibetan people. The exhibit is about understanding the incredibly rich Tibetan culture and the people who have maintained compassion in the face of tremendous difficulties. |

Museum Benefit. Join us for a celebration of LOSAR the Tibetan New Year at a Special Fundraising Benefit for the Jacques Marchais Museum of Tibetan Art.
Celebrate the Year of the Iron Tiger with a cocktail hour, buffet dinner and cultural performance.
The event will be held at the Stone Court, Flagg Place, Staten Island. Tickets at $125 per person. Please call 718-987-3500 for additional information.

Celebration of Losar, Tibetan New Year, with Lama Karma Namgyel.
Tea Ceremony
The tea ceremony is held at the beginning of the New Year. The ceremony includes offerings of fruit, cookies, butter and wine. The offerings are placed on a shrine and wishes are made to start the year with positive thoughts, wealth, healing, patience, compassion, loving kindness, and joy. Admission, $25 adults, $20 member/students and seniors.

Celebration of Losar, Tibetan New Year, with Lama Karma Namgyel.

Buddha of Compassion or Chenrezig Fire Ceremony.
During this special Fire Ceremony, certain offerings of food and herb medicines are given to the fire while Lama Karma changes and recites special prayers. Attendees will have the opportunity to offer individual prayers during the ceremony. The fire ceremony offers healing to all types of diseases and imbalances and purifies obstacles and negativity around us and in our world.
This event will be held outside. Please dress warmly.

Coffee, Tea and Light Refreshments will be served.

Teaching and Discussion: The Eight Auspicious Symbols.
The eight auspicious symbols of Buddhism are comprised of the white conch shell, the precious umbrella, the victory banner, the golden fishes, the endless knot, the dharmachakra, the lotus flower, and the treasure vase. Lama Karma will present a teaching that explains the meanings of these auspicious symbols.
Admission for the full day program is $45 for adults, $40 for students, seniors and members. Half day program $25 adults, $20 students/seniors and members.

Celebration of Losar with Lama Karma Namgyel.
Black Hat Dance: Cham
The Black Hat dance is an elaborate ritual which is performed to eliminate obstacles and the powerful nature of the dance is believed to frighten malelovent spirits. The dancer wears an elaborate costume of a silk brocade gown and large black hat. At the beginning of the dance, the Black Hat Dancer makes symbolic offerings of gold libation (tea) to the lineage lamas, tutelary deities (different forms of the Buddha) and Dharmapalas (truth protectors), in order to please them and receive their blessings. The Black Hat dance is performed to mark the end of the passing year.
Admission is $25 for adults, $20 for seniors, students and members. |

Family workshop: Photographing Others. Photographer Phil Borges' portraits document people in a very intimate way. After learning about his portraits of the Tibetan people, participants will gain knowledge of specific techniques for capturing their own portraits that tell a story and reveal something about the subject. Participants shoud bring their own digital camera as wll as an object that has meaning to them. Open to all ages. Admission: $10 adults, $8 members and students.

EXHIBIT OPENING. Tibetan Portrait: The Power of Compassion.
The Museum will present the second installation of Tibetan Portrait: The Power of Compassion featuring 17 new portraits from renowned photographer, Phil Borges. These portraits will remain on view through Deecember 2010.
Admission is free.
