Members of the Jacques Marchais Museum of Tibetan Art’s Board and Staff had an audience with His Holiness the Sakya Trizin on Monday, March 30, 2015 at the Tsechen Kunchab Ling Center in Walden, NY, the Seat of His Holiness the Sakya Trizin in the United States.

His Holiness the 41st Sakya Trizin is the supreme head of the Sakya School, which is one of the four main schools of Tibetan Buddhism. Born in Tibet in 1945, His Holiness belongs to the ancient and distinguished Khön family, whose history extends back to the early days of Tibet, before the arrival of Buddhism. Following the Chinese invasion of Tibet in 1959, His Holiness moved to India, established the Sakya Guru monastery in Darjeeling and began the major task of reassembling the Sakya community.

In order to maintain the tradition of the Khön family lineage, His Holiness married Dagmo Tashi Lhakee in 1974. Within the year they celebrated the auspicious birth of their elder son Ratna Vajra. In the meantime His Holiness made his first teaching tour of Europe, America and various countries in Asia. He continues to give teachings to this day.

This is the second time the Museum has had the good fortune to meet with His Holiness. Among the topics discussed were the Museum’s recent trip to a Sakya school and monastery in Pokhara, Nepal, the Museum’s on-going collaboration with Tsechen Kunchab Ling and a possible visit of His Holiness to the Museum in 2016. Margaret Harrington, the Secretary of the Museum’s Board said of the visit, “We are so thrilled to further this important partnership between the Museum and Tsechen Kunchab Ling. We are happy to share artifacts for exhibition with their cultural hall and we are looking forward to working with them on a possible visit of His Holiness to the Museum.”

Since 2014, the Museum has lent objects from the collection to Tsechen Kunchab Ling for exhibition in the cultural hall. It is an opportunity for more of the collection to be seen especially by members of the Tibetan Community of NY and NJ who are frequent visitors to the Temple and cultural hall. Currently the Tsechen Kunchab Ling exhibition includes textiles, boots, Tibetan headdresses, and jewelry from the Jacques Marchais’ Collection.
